Statement

For each horse that I make, I have an idea of the look, scale and mood that I wish to capture but it is only as I roll out the earthstone paper clay in front of me and tear the sections that the character is truly formed.

Like their real life counterparts each ceramic horse retains its independence and the finished piece absorbs my influence without relinquishing the unique qualities of movement and expression. As such with this time consuming process, each horse is literally formed in my hands and without artificial aids. This sympathetic and previously unexplored approach allows the intrinsic spirit of the animal to exude its presence upon us, while my inspiration is itself drawn from a detailed knowledge of working horses and a rich heritage of imagery from across the ages.
