George Chapman Artist Painter Rhondda South West Wales Fountain Fine Art Llandeilo Aberaeron
Born 1908 in London
Died 1993 in Aberaeron, Ceredigion
George's studying started at the Gravesend School of Art before moving on through The Slade School of Fine Art and on to the Royal College of Art. After this he moved to Great Barfield in Essex but found little to inspire him until his first visit to Wales in the 1950s. His love affair with the soulful landscape and communities of the Welsh valleys saw him eventually move across the border in 1960 (shortly after winning the Gold Medal for Fine Art at the National Eisteddfod in 1957). Here, George settled in Aberaeron and continued to paint and create etchings of Rhondda Valley scenes until the late 1980s, watching them change with the eventual wind-down of the coal mining industry in South Wales. His last major exhibition, The Welsh Story - A Retrospective Exhibition, was held at the Aberystwyth Arts Centre in 1989.
Fountain Fine Art has a range of pictures by George Chapman including rare pieces from the pre-Rhondda era. We also hold a number of drawings to compliment the paintings at the gallery. These range in price from £300 - £500 and can be viewed on application.
