Anna Rothwell Artist Sculptor South West Wales Fountain Fine Art Llandeilo Cardiff Artist's Statement
The main focus of my work is human behaviour and society, expressed through the use of the figure. I seek to capture intimate moments of people in public places, in doing so encouraging the viewer to empathize with the work.
Drawing on everyday people doing everyday things, makes us feel closer to the pieces. That the figures are a range of ages and natural physiques intensifies the sensation that these are not idealised figurines, but representations of real people. The viewer’s participation is integral to the work, to complete the relationship and feelings alluded to by the silent language of the pose and gesture. It is relevant, therefore, to generate this response that the pieces are representational. Suggesting the weight of flesh, mass and tensions within the body gives the forms a sense of life, making us react as we would with any other human being.
I have experimented with ways of guiding the viewer’s eye through a range of techniques. Movement is captured in the figures composition and the exaggeration of perspective and proportions. We are encouraged to explore the figure to a greater extent, with the eye coming to rest at the point of interest.
The viewer’s eye is drawn further by 3-dimensional sketching of the surface with hay soaked in slip. This method lends itself to a looser style of modelling which can infer that the figure is out of focus. Areas unaffected by this technique are therefore given greater prominence, guiding the viewer to the intimate sense of activity. General InformationIn 1998 I began a two-year Figurative Sculpture course based at Stafford Art College. The teaching was very traditional, including days of life drawing and sculpting, portraiture, anatomy lessons and mould making. The course gave me a good foundation of skills but I sought a degree.
I was instantly drawn to U.W.I.C University, which had a history of figurative Artists who had attended the Ceramic BA. The Ceramic course taught me the technique of firing clay as opposed to my previous method of mould making - fixing the original piece into an eternal object. Although, historically, Ceramics is associated with shiny glazes, I feel this finish would submerge the detail of modelling. Therefore, through experimentation of combining clays, firing to a range of temperatures and adding oxides/stains to define texture, I have formulated a method that produces the rich colour I seek whilst retaining all the modelled qualities.
Having graduated earlier this year I have set up a studio in Cardiff. Through the Summer I attended a number of Art Fairs and had an exhibition in London. Currently my work can be seen at 'The Red Brick Gallery', Guilford, 'Fountain Fine Art', Llandeilo and from 1st-13th Feb 2005 Contemporary Ceramics Gallery, London.
I have been a regular exhibitor at the Ceramica ceramics and pottery festival in Llandeilo and was awarded the student prize in 2004 Commissions welcome. |
